Volunteers are the backbone of communities nationwide, providing essential support that individuals and organizations rely on every day. April is National Volunteer Month, a time to honor and celebrate the individuals who give their time, talent, and passion to causes that change lives.

In celebration of National Volunteer Month, CAC connected with volunteers from across our programs to share their stories—highlighting the many ways they show up for our community and make a difference every day.

Meet Marion Spann, Canopy Thrift™ Store

On any given Tuesday or Thursday you will find Marion Spann working in the back of the house at CAC’s, Canopy Thrift™ Store sorting and pricing jewelry and handbags. There is an air of joy  and energy filling the back room as a constant flow of volunteers seek out Marion saying hello, giving her a hug, asking questions, and filling her in on the latest in their lives.

For nearly two decades, Marion has been a familiar and welcoming presence at the Canopy Thrift™, both in the front and back end of the house. She been a constant presence bringing her warm, personable and engaging nature to customers, clients and volunteers. What began as volunteering alongside a friend from church has grown into many years of creating impact and meaningful relationships.

What inspired you to start volunteering at CAC—and what keeps you coming back?
I started volunteering with a friend from church and found I loved the interaction with all the people I met, including wonderful clients, volunteers, and staff. This is what keeps me coming back.

What makes volunteering at CAC so meaningful to you?
It’s the people. The gratitude from those we help, the friendships among volunteers, and the sense of community make volunteering at CAC very meaningful.

What is your advice for those who want to volunteer with CAC?
Just do it. You are not just helping others—you’re helping yourself by being part of such a collaborative and congenial community.

If you’re inspired to get involved, we invite you to learn more and sign up at ourcac.org/volunteer.
